Live long and prosper

07/06/2005

The one thing we are all headed for is old age, so health and wellbeing for older people are truly important to each one of us.

Advice on how to live a healthier and more fulfilling life in older age is being offered to people in Gloucestershire next month. Gloucestershire County Council and Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Primary Care Trust (PCT) are hosting the second Health and Wellbeing Event for Older People at Cheltenham Town Hall on Thursday 16th June between 10am and 3pm. Older people and carers in the locality are invited to drop in, have a cup of tea and seek advice and information from a whole range of local organisations and services. They may also like to take the opportunity for a blood pressure check or advice on footwear.

Visitors will be able to pick up useful tips on how to avoid trips and falls, keeping fit and healthy in older age, caring for someone and coping with life after a stroke or heart attack. They can also find out about new services, such as the extra care sheltered housing development in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire Libraries Service, the Expert Patient Programme and lots more. Nearly 40 exhibitors will be present, including Pets as Therapy, Age Concern Gloucestershire, The Stroke Association, Carers Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire Pensioners Forum.

Jill Kearsley, Associate Director and Lead for Older People's Services at Cheltenham and Tewkesbury PCT, said: "I am thrilled that we are able to bring so many local organisations together to give residents information about services which could really make a difference to their health and wellbeing. We are constantly planning new services, and this event will enable us to take on board suggestions about what people really want, and build these into our plans."

Ruth FitzJohn, Chair of Cheltenham and Tewkesbury PCT, said: "No-one wants to lose their independence, and this event aims to help people keep it. Perhaps you need to gather information, make changes or connect into some support, so why not visit the Health and Wellbeing Event on 16th June to ensure you are doing everything you can to plan ahead? You will be able to get really practical advice and help from local health and social care professionals to ensure you are as supported as possible in planning for a happy and healthy year ahead."

Cllr Tony Hicks, Lead Councillor Adult Services, said: "The council firmly believes in keeping older people in their homes to enjoy independence amongst their friends. We do hope you will benefit from this event."

Every person who visits is invited to have a complimentary cup of coffee or tea and to have their blood pressure and footwear checked.
